What is Better, Near or Far Infrared Sauna?

When you are considering purchasing a sauna there are many things to think about like what size sauna you should get, where to put it, what style and also what heat source it uses. Most home based saunas use infrared heating elements. Infrared therapy works by providing a mild heat stressor to the body causing it to produce heat-shock proteins which offset some of the effects of oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals and supporting antioxidant levels.

What’s the Difference Between Near and Far Infrared Light?

Near infrared (NIR) is the type of infrared light nearest to the visible light spectrum. The sun emits nearly half of its total energy in the NIR spectrum and we are biologically wired to use this energy. NIR heats the body from the inside out using invisible wavelengths between 700 and 1200 nanometers. The lower the light spectrum, the deeper the penetration, and the 810-830nm NIR range has been studied extensively for its effects on ATP production, the molecule necessary for our cells to function.

NIR is the shortest of the three infrareds and is absorbed just below the surface of the skin, promoting wound healing, cell health/regeneration, skin revitalization and can mitigate inflammation. NIR has also been shown to help clear up acne lesions, improve fine lines and wrinkles, and encourages collagen synthesis. It promotes skin renewal, cell health, wound healing, and tissue growth.

Although the longest wavelength, far-infrared light (FIR) is mainly absorbed by the water within our bodies and for that reason penetrates only 0.1mm beneath the skin. Through being absorbed by the body’s water, FIR light can cause alterations to the body’s protein structures. FIR stimulates vasodilation which in turn increases blood flow throughout the body. FIR can reduce pain, ease joint stiffness, decrease inflammation and alleviate overall body stress.

Which Type of Infrared Sauna is Best?

Ultimately it will come down to what type of healing experience you are looking for. While both near and far infrared systems can benefit the overall wellness of your body, they go about it quite differently. Nowadays, there are also full spectrum infrared saunas that include both NIR and FIR wavelengths, giving you the best of both infrared worlds.

Our Finnleo saunas are purpose-engineered to create the most soothing, full-body heat exposure available. Finnleo was also the first company to introduce a proprietary low EMR/EF technology and their saunas are equipped with their EvenHeat system, which was designed to ensure that every part of your body is warmed evenly.

In addition to custom built options, Finnleo offers two lines of infrared saunas: The S-Series and the InfraSauna. The S-Series offers models ranging from an individual to a four-person booth. The InfraSauna line is an innovative and unique combination of an infrared and a traditional steam sauna. All Finnleo saunas are made from sustainably and responsibly sourced materials, and the company doesn’t use any toxic glues or varnishes.
