Installing a swim spa inside could be a great option for those who live in extremely hot or cold climates or who just want the convenience of having their spa close by. There are a number of different indoor options, including a basement and also some considerations to keep in mind when it comes to installing a swim spa indoors.

Can You Install a Swim Spa Indoors?

Sunrooms, enclosed patios and basements are all excellent locations for an indoor spa. You’ll want to ensure that the floor is a material that will prevent the absorption of water and also be a slip-free surface. Since water will inevitably be splashed on the floor, drainage is also important in planning and installation. A properly leveled drainage system can whisk away excess water and reduce the risk of slippage.

Warm water in an enclosed space will increase humidity levels which can wreak havoc on the structure of your home including walls and ceilings if not properly contained. Not only can it promote the growth of mold and mildew, it can also trigger the release of dangerous gasses from building materials and increase the chances of wood rot. You’ll want to install a vapor barrier and have proper ventilation.

Even though you won’t need to worry about leaves, insects and other debris falling into an indoor swim spa, you should still use a properly fitting cover whenever the spa isn’t in use. This will minimize evaporation, decrease the room’s humidity and reduce the likelihood of condensation. A swim spa cover will greatly reduce many of the problems often associated with high humidity and allow you to rely less on air ventilation systems to keep the humidity levels in check. It’s also an important safety measure to keep your spa inaccessible to children and pets.

Basements, provided they have a high enough ceiling, can be one of the preferred locations to install a swim spa because they typically have a concrete floor which is sturdy enough to support the weight of the spa. You’ll want to use a floor sealant on the concrete or lay down another flooring material such as tile or rubber to ensure you have a slip-free surface that won’t absorb water.

There are many advantages to installing your swim spa in your basement, including a lower installation cost since things like landscaping, excavation machinery and the preparation of a solid base won’t be needed. You’ll find your heating costs are lower and you’ll have easy, year-round access to your spa no matter the weather. It can also be a safer location for your spa if you have pets and children.

In addition to the proper installation considerations we mentioned earlier, you’ll also want to make sure that you can get your spa into the basement! Although much smaller than a full-sized swimming pool, a swim spa probably won’t fit down an average flight of stairs.  The ideal situation for a basement swim spa installation would be to do it while the house is being built so you don’t have to worry about tight corners or low overhead clearance. Otherwise careful measurements will need to be made to ensure the spa can reach its final destination.
