Swim spas are truly one of the greatest innovations in history of the pool and spa industry, they’re affordable, portable, energy efficient, therapeutic and they can be used year-round. If you love the idea of having a pool that you can use even in the dead of winter, then maybe it’s worth considering a swim spa.
How Do Swim Spas Work?
There are many different types of pools that can be installed in your backyard ranging from a full-sized swimming pool which unless you build it indoors or live somewhere without harsh winters it won’t be used all year, to hot tubs which are too small to swim or play in. Lap pools, although smaller than full-sized swimming pools, still hold a lot of water and are expensive to heat. A swim spa however gives you the best parts of a swimming pool and a hot tub all in one.
A swim spa generates a current strong enough that when you swim against it, you’ll be held in place; it’s similar to how a treadmill works but with a current of water rather than a looping conveyor belt. Because you’re kept in place while swimming, you’ll never reach the end of the pool or need to turn around.
This treadmill-like function allows a swim spa to be much smaller than a lap pool or full-sized swimming pool, and because of this smaller size, it’s easier and much more cost effective to keep the water heated. Some swim spas have two separate tanks, one made for swimming and the other for soaking which allows for two different water temperatures and also simultaneous swimming and soaking.
Can You Use a Swim Spa All Year?
Depending on the model, swim spas have varying levels of insulation. Those designed for warmer climates or installed in the ground have less insulation than above-ground models made for colder climates. No matter where you live, you should also consider using a tight-fitting, insulated swim spa cover- not only will it reduce the amount of debris that gets in the water, but it will also cut down on heat loss when your swim spa isn’t in use.
When it is cold outside, it’s common for people to not want to leave their home to exercise. With a swim spa, your gym is in your backyard and it also doubles as a soothing place to relax and recover. Swim spas also offer more fitness options than your standard lap or swimming pool such as walking, cycling and resistance training.
